Chelsi, right, and Jade Reynolds layer cinnamon sponge cakes atop one another through a dowel during the taping of a “Bake It Like Buddy” episode recently at Carlo’s Bakery in Hoboken, N.J. The Peoria mother and daughter will appear on the show at 9 p.m. Sept. 29 on Discovery Family.

A Peoria mother and daughter recently had their cake-creating competence tested by none other than Buddy Valastro.

Chelsi and Jade Reynolds were chosen to appear on the former Cake Boss’ newest reality TV venture, “Bake It Like Buddy,” which will air at 9 p.m. Sept. 29 on Discovery Family.

The show, which premiered Sept. 8, pits two baking family duos against each other at Valastro’s own Carlo’s Bakery in Hoboken, N.J. Teams, which compete for $1,000 and professional baking supplies, are given four hours to design, bake and decorate a themed cake. The Reynoldses were challenged to come up with a unicorn cake, something they’re both well versed in.

“We do it all the time,” Chelsi said. “We’d never done a cake with molding chocolate like we did, but we have done a ton of cakes like this, so we had it in the bag.”

The Let’s Kiss And CAKE Up! owner has been in business since 2011. Jade, a senior at Sunrise Mountain High School, helps out on the weekends. The home-based business produces nine to 12 cakes every weekend. Business is good.

“It’s insane,” Chelsi said. “Too busy to keep up.”

So busy, in fact, that Chelsi is already booking cakes for May 2019, and that’s without even advertising.

“Honestly, it’s mainly word of mouth and just Facebook,” she said. “Every customer I have, I keep them. I don’t have any mad customers, we have great reviews. They just tell their friends and tell their family and that’s just how we’ve grown.”

Grown they have, filling orders for multiple events, including two weddings and a quinceañera the weekend of Sept. 22-23, and quickly garnering the following review on the company’s Facebook page: “Best choice for a quinceañera cake ever!! Looked gorgeous and tasted amazing!!”

Chelsi estimated they fed dessert to about 700 people that weekend.

“Sometimes we get stressed out, but we fix that really fast,” Chelsi said, adding that when they’re in the kitchen together, they crank up the oldies and dance around.”

“And just have fun with it,” Jade added.

“We love doing it, Chelsi said. “We don’t think of it as a job, we think of it as trying to see how happy we can make customers.”

Reality TV, take 2

Chelsi’s appearance on “Bake It Like Buddy” wasn’t her first foray into reality TV. She and her mother appeared on Food Network’s “Cupcake Wars” a few years ago, but an oven malfunction kept the two from securing the title.

“Our ovens didn’t turn on,” Chelsi said. “I was livid. I was so mad.”

But the experience taught her what to expect in the world of reality TV.

“I was just kind of trying to keep Jade calm because she had never been on a show and didn’t really know what to expect,” Chelsi said.

One thing neither of them expected was how nice Valastro would be, Chelsi said.

“He’s so sweet, he’s a big family man,” Chelsi said. “His bakery is a family-owned bakery. Him and his sisters run it. So he’s super, super nice. He’s such a nice guy, he kept hugging us. It was a really cool experience. Jade cried.”

Originally from Louisiana, the Reynoldses had never been to the East Coast before. They spent an extra day to take in New York’s world-famous sights, including Times Square, the Empire State Building, Central Park and Rockefeller Center.

They also sampled a variety of what the Empire State is known across the globe for — its pizza.

“You know, it was, OK,” Chelsi said, laughing. “All people talk about is how good the pizza is, and honestly, our Rosati’s Pizza here tasted just like you’d get in New York, even better.”

Always up for a challenge, Chelsi and Jade recently filled their first cookie order.

“That was terrifying,” Chelsi said. “We did it for a wedding. We did 80 personalized cookies, and we just actually got the review back and they loved it.

“So cookies is the new thing.”
