Peoria resident Jesse Romero, second from right, holds the proclamation presented to him during a council meeting Oct. 16 by Vice Mayor Michael Finn, center. The proclamation was signed by Gov. Doug Ducey declaring October Hit and Run Awareness Month.

It happened eight years ago in Peoria, Oct. 29, 2010. Joey Romero, 18, a student at Centennial High School, was hit by an SUV as he walked home from work.

The driver did not stop. She was later found and sentenced to six years in prison. She had driven away from an accident that turned to tragedy. Joey did not survive. He died two days after he was hit.

Since that day, the Romero family has campaigned to ensure drivers who hit and run do not get light sentences. The Legislature eventually passed “Joey’s Law,” which went into effect July 24, 2014.

Joey’s Law calls for stiff sentences for those who leave the scene of vehicle accidents.

Jesse Romero Jr., Joey’s father, along with other members of his family, accepted a proclamation from Gov. Doug Ducey, declaring October Hit and Run Awareness Month. Peoria Vice Mayor Michael Finn presented the proclamation to the family at the Oct. 16 Peoria City Council meeting.

Romero had the support of Peoria city officials to get Joey’s Law passed.

It makes a hit and run a felony instead of a misdemeanor for someone to leave the scene of a collision without helping a person injured by the collision. It also mandates drug or alcohol screening if evidence shows impairment was a factor in the collision.

A short video gave statistics about hit and run accidents and told of the numbers of people killed in those accidents.

According to police reports, in 2017, 15,000-plus fatalities were the result of hit-and-run accidents across the country.
