Knecht a bold, innovative, professional leader

Kathy Knecht is well known for her education resume, but I know her as a businesswoman. The Leadership West board hired Knecht to be the first executive director of the nonprofit leader development corporation in 2009. It was the height of the recession and we knew that if we didn’t have bold, innovative, professional leadership that the corporation would not survive.

Knecht was the perfect fit. She was highly skilled and committed to the West Valley; admired and respected among the members; and already well-connected to business, government and community leaders in the region. In the five years that followed, Knecht developed a new funding stream, raised the profile of the organization in the community and ran the entire operation — from budgeting, to marketing, to programming and events, to volunteer management — everything.

Despite the political nature of the leaders who go through Leadership West and the issues and topics covered in the program, she did all this in the most inclusive, non-partisan way. She expertly modeled the non-political culture of Leadership West, always focusing on issues and nurturing relationships, never focused on politics.

By the time Knecht left the position to pursue a master’s degree, she had brought the corporation to a higher level, financially, programmatically and influentially. That’s the kind of leader that Knecht is. She leaves things better than she found it. I know she’ll do the same in the state Senate for Arizona.
