A Tutor with a Tail

The “four-legged friend” giving young readers a boost of confidence

Learning to read can not only be a little scary, it can be a little intimidating for a child when you add in an excited mom or dad listening in and offering helpful advice. While well meaning, for some kids that advice can feel more like criticism than caring.

Enter, Sammy. He’s a certified therapy dog who comes twice a month to Glendale’s Foothills Library where kids sign up to read to him as part of the Paws to Read program.

“For beginning and struggling readers, saying the words aloud to someone who doesn’t correct them when a mistake is made, is a confidence booster,” Glendale Librarian Kristin Fletcher-Spear said.

She said Sammy’s a good listener who quietly enjoys the stories kids tell at their own pace.

The Paws to Read with Sammy program gives young readers a chance to brush up on their reading skills, build their confidence and have a tail-wagging good time.

Here is a list of the next Paws to Read times:
• Nov. 14, 4 to 5 p.m
• Nov. 27, 4 to 5 p.m.
• Dec. 12,  4 to 5 p.m.
