A loaded gun went to show and tell

A 9-year-old took a loaded handgun to her school last week. Because politicians and the NRA care more about power and money than the safety of our children, we all know nothing will be done. Nothing, except the same ridiculous NRA rebuttal: “We do care about the safety of our children, that’s why we fight for the right of a parent of a 9-year-old to own a gun.”

Who in Washington will fight for the right of children to be safe from guns? Yes, we could and should blame the parents of this 9-year-old. Yes, allowing your child to have access to your gun should be criminal. But, we are all to blame. Those of us who hold on to our extreme opinions and are unwilling to create an atmosphere of sensible change are to blame. Those politicians who fill their pockets with NRA money while refusing to do what is right for their own children and grandchildren are to blame. What if this 9-year-old had fired her gun? What if some of her classmates had died? Even then, we know nothing would change. Nothing, except a grandparent looking at pictures of his innocent grandchild who died because a loaded gun went to show and tell.

My grandchildren were in that Phoenix school. My power and yours is limited to our vote. On Nov. 6, vote for children, vote for local, state, and national politicians who are in favor of sensible gun reform and who take no money from the NRA.
