Hunt Real Estate employees, a United Way volunteer and Dobra Dental representative hold up the Halloween trees and wreaths with bats that hold lists of needs for the homeless: front row, Stacey Melton, Laura Hansen and Amber Black; back row, Danny Dobra, Kip Thomas, Kathy Flinn and Rebeka Banks.

Want to pick a bat off a tree or a wreath and treat a homeless person? If individuals stop by Hunt Real Estate ERA in north Glendale near Arrowhead, they can select a paper bat with the treat of their choice and donate it on the spot or take a dozen or more bats and create a list of treats to take back later. The treats go into a box and United Way will put it in a bag with other treats to be delivered to homeless people in the Valley.

Kathy Flinn, office manager for Hunt, came up with the idea to create Halloween trees and wreaths with paper bats pinned to the branches. On each bat is the name of an item to be donated:

  • socks
  • sunglasses
  • hand sanitizer
  • antibiotic ointment
  • shampoo
  • toothbrushes
  • toothpaste
  • feminine hygiene products
  • sunscreen
  • lip balm
  • Band-aids
  • water bottle
  • conditioner

Dobra Dental, 17235 N. 75th Ave., Suite C135, is donating 100 toothbrushes. So, all that is needed now are 100 tubes of toothpaste.

Flinn said she and her staff are trying to get all of the businesses in their area to join in on the Trick or Treat for the Homeless campaign. The goal is to collect 100 of each item on the list.

Kip Thomas of United Way is on loan for the event from Arizona Public Service; he said the utility donates various employees four months out of the year to United Way. Thomas said he finished a Project Connect event to help homeless people last month at the LDS Church in Tempe. He is aware of Project Connect events that are usually held at the Vineyard Church on Peoria and 63rd avenues in Glendale.

For now, if individuals or businesses want to help Flinn and her troops reach their goal, take donations of items listed above to the Hunt Real Estate office, 7170 W. Camino San Xavier, Suite D113 (turn north off Bell Road on 73rd Avenue, then turn right at the next stop sign; Hunt Real Estate is on the left about a quarter mile).
