Arizona State Fair: making memories for more than a century

Arizona families and friends are counting down the days until they can create new memories together with all of the sights, sounds, flavors and experiences at the state’s biggest event of the year — the Arizona State Fair.

From Oct. 5 through 28, Arizona fairgoers will be able to enjoy 18 days of food, music, entertainment, rides, art and agriculture. Here are a few highlights coming to this year’s fair:

Featured attractions
Specialty exhibits for 2018 include:
• King Tut and the Egyptian Treasures — A once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to view legendary artifacts and treasures from King Tutankhamun, Ramses II, Nefertari, Tuthmosis III, Alexander the Great, and Cleopatra VII. The exhibition also includes items from the Coptic and Islamic Museum of Art. Admission to the exhibit is an additional $5, free to children 5 and younger. Tickets can be purchased online or at the fair.
• Tapigami — Contemporary artist Danny Scheible will use his unlikely medium (Scotch tape) to create large-scale installations in the Shopping Pavilion.

Grandstand entertainment
All grandstand events are free with fair admission. The action kicks off with Figure 8 Races opening weekend followed by the Freestyle Mania Thrill Show featuring Megasaurus, a mechanical beast that will transform from his vehicular form into the massive powerful dinosaur that rips a car in half, and concludes with an All Stars of Monster Truck show.

Competitions and livestock shows
• Livestock shows and competitions are a mainstay at the fair, with adult and youth competitors coming from all 15 counties in Arizona. This year’s fair will feature more than 9,000 competitive entries, including 500-plus animals.
• Kerr’s Farm Tours — Learn how a farm operates, thanks to Arizona Milk Producers and the Kerr family.
• Great American Petting Zoo — Presented by Maricopa County Fair, this family-friendly petting zoo features bunnies, goats and more furry creatures to hold.
• All Indian Rodeo — Native American rodeo performers will vie for buckles and cash in a full schedule of rodeo events during this Desert Diamond West Valley Casino-sponsored competition.

Deep fried (or not) everything
From traditional caramel apples and cotton candy to the deep-fried filet mignon and egg roll on a stick, the fair has a taste to please every palate.
